Founded in 1978, Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps (RVAC) is a volunteer non-profit organization that provides Emergency Medical Service to the Town of Riverhead. Our district is approximately 78 square miles and is classified as a tourist destination on the east end of Long Island, New York. Our district has several points of interest including Riverhead Raceway, Peconic Bay Medical Center, Tanger Outlets, Countless Vineyards and Wineries and the top rated water park in the tri-state area, Splish Splash. RVAC provides all emergency medical & rehabilitation care for all fire scenes within the confines of the Riverhead and Jamesport Fire Districts.
RVAC responds to approximately 5,500 calls for emergency medical assistance a year. Calls for emergency medical assistance are answered by our five New York State Department of Health Certified ambulances and three First Response vehicles, which are staffed by a minimum of an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic. Currently, we have a membership of roughly 85 members, with certifications ranging from Driver/Helper to Paramedic.
Besides answering calls for emergency medical assistance, RVAC also provides “stand-by” emergency medical coverage for special events such as concerts, sporting events, and other large gatherings of people. Our EMS Bike Patrol unit assists us in providing medical care in large crowds. Most recently, we have purchased a John Deere 6x4 Gator ATV, 2-16’ cargo trailers and a climate controlled rehabilitation tent that will help us respond to all large scale disasters. It is important to us to stay current in an ever-changing field of technology and advances in medicine.
Our volunteers are highly dedicated and motivated, spending hundreds and in many cases, thousands of hours every year training to become the best possible EMS providers.
